Abstract
The purpose of this article is to study the role of the sea, a means mainly used by Le Clézio in his travels and in those of his fictional characters. We study its role as a mediating and transitional space, not only between two spaces but also between the past and the present. Moreover, it is a space in which past, present and future merge. Within it, the dissociative conception of the proper life of advanced societies gives way to the reconciliation of opposites. This allows the author and his characters to advance in the quest for self.
