Beliefs of murder convicts about themselv es, others and the future – the possibility of cognitive restructuring as the infl uence of resocialisation
Abstract
Theoretical basis for the study is the cognitive theory, which assumes that the key to the effective functioning of human are his cognition, that determine system of beliefs about themselves, others and the future. The research presented in the article was conducted with 232 men and women that were sentenced to life imprisonment or a penalty of 25 years for murder. The results were subjected to factor analysis, which revealed four factors: a sense of loss, beliefs about his own resourcefulness, beliefs about the officers and beliefs of others. The article discusses the relationship between the revealed variables and demographic and social variables in the context of cognitive restructuring opportunities.
