Differences in the Assessment of the Functioning of Romantic Relationships and Early Maladaptive Schemas of Young Between Mothers and Daughters

Abstract


The aim of this study was to explore characteristic of romantic relationship in the group of mothers and daughters. Because of the role of early maladaptive schema in people interpretation of themselves and others and their genesis in the family of origin, also meaning of modeling interpersonal relationship and the well-being of parents, it was wondered, if the well-being of romantic relationship is transfered by parents to their children. In this research was checked if features characterized romantic relationship of mothers and daughters are similar.

120 people consisted of 60 pairs of mothers – daughters were tested. Age of younger women was 18–35 years, they were in relationship for at least 6 months, older women aged 41–63 years. Respondents filled out four questionnaire: Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-S3), The Attatchment Style Questionnaire, Communication in Marriage Questionnaire, Questionnaire of Well Accorded Marriage.

There are significant differences between variables of attachment style but not in every scale. Questionnaire of Well Accorded Marriage showed that differences are high for three scales. However, in Communication Questionnaire are two scales which show significant differences between mothers and daughters. Generally there is no high differences or correlations in Young Schema Questionnaire, only in self-sacrifice schema mothers got higher results and insufficient Self-Control and/or Self-Discipline schema is bigger with daughters.

Cultural reasons and dynamic of time as well may be the cause of gained results. Despite of intensifications each features of relationship, self opinion and value quality of relationship are similar at mothers and daughters.
