Abstract


A review of: Kartalova, Mariyana. Bulgarian Surnames Motivated by Profession or Craft. Paisiy Hilendarski Plovdiv University Press, 2024. ISBN 978-619-202-995-1, 245 pp. [In Bulgarian: Карталова, Марияна. Фамилните имена на българите, мотивирани от професия или занаят. Пловдив: УИ Паисий Хилендарски, 2024.] Mariyana Kartalova’s  monograph focuses on 1670 Bulgarian surnames, motivated by a profession or craft. The linguistic units are subjected to semantic and etymological analysis. The synonymous relationships between them are also studied. The Bulgarian regulatory framework in the field of naming and its impact on the state of surnames is discussed.
