Ancient Methodology of Conquering the City According to Philo of Byzantium (3rd Century BC)
Abstract
Ancient historiography provides many descriptions of sieges, but it does so in a typical way – omitting details that are important for a researcher of military history. Authors such as Aeneas the Tactician and Philo of Byzantium come to the rescue. They were both responsible for creating the first military textbooks dealing with the defense of a besieged city and the siege of cities. This article aims to present primarily the methods of conducting a siege in ancient times in the context of the recommendations provided by Philo of Byzantium.
