Landscape of the Origins of Rome. Notes on the Iconography of Roman Coins

Agata Aleksandra Kluczek

Abstract

The study presented here deals with pictorial representations of the so-called numismatic landscape of the origins of Rome. The subject of interest is the principal, being the centre, or secondary, usually serving as background, element placed on the reverses of the coins and medallions that form the basis of the analysis. It focuses on landscape elements as a supplement to the image of the she-wolf, Romulus and Remus, placed on republican, imperial, and provincial coins. These elements are a tree, a grotto or rock, a mountain. Usually, the centre of their references is Rome (and its environs). However, in some representations on provincial coins, these secondary details are elements of the local scenery or simply an abstract mythological landscape.

Keywords

Roman republican coin; Roman imperial coin; Roman provincial coin; coin’s iconography; she-wolf; foundation’s myth
