Editorial Policies

Focus and Scope

Culture and Values discusses questions which are on the one hand timeless and concern the structure and mechanisms of culture as such, but on the other hand are of a contemporary and topical aspect as they reflect special challenges of the present day. This problematic includes the following detailed fields of problems (approached from the perspective of various academic disciplines):

  • the cultural specificity of human existence
  • the ontology of culture and its elements, such as, e.g., morality, knowledge, language, artwork 
  • the function of values in individual life and culture 
  • historical and cultural changeability and diversity of values
  • typological diversity of values and their specifics (moral, aesthetic, intellectual, social values, hedonist and other values)
  • changeability and plurality of cultures, their typology, the possibility of constructing a universal culture
  • cultural diversity and current globalisation processes 
  • the meaning, causes and modes of historical change, the problem of historical progress 
  • historical and contemporary debates and theories in philosophical anthropology
  • the problem of human freedom
  • historical and contemporary debates and ethical theories 
  • historical and contemporary debates and aesthetic theories 
  • historical and contemporary debates and theories in social and political philosophy
  • philosophy and other disciplines’ consideration of culture, history and values 
  • the epistemological and methodological issues of cultural studies, history and values 
  • moral and axiological aspects of current challenges (globalisation, the problem of poverty, ecology, computer revolution, etc.) 
  • moral and axiological aspects of European Union policies (values founding the identity of Europe, axiological unity and diversity, duties of Europe faced with other cultures, immigrants and their cultural assimilation, the Judeo-Christian and secular history of Europe and its present identity). 

This list of issues is not exhaustive, but still open to new problems – not unlike the dynamics of culture itself unfolding in its history of values. To discuss these questions is not only of theoretical significance, serving the enrichment of its self-consciousness, but is also practical, indicating directions for solving the dilemmas of contemporaneity. The discussion of these problems has not only theoretical but practical meaning as well, showing the directions towards the solution of these dilemmas, of which the present day is full. Even if a final or fully-satisfactory solution cannot be wholly attained, one may hope that situating research not only within the sub-disciplines of philosophy, but also in other academic disciplines will result in accurate results, contributing to a better understanding of the phenomena of the human being, culture and values. Today, philosophy as a scholarly discipline cannot conduct its research without knowing how other disciplines approach the world, including the human being and culture.

Peer Review Process

  1. All submitted texts undergo a preliminary review by the editorial board as a first stage.

  2. If the outcome of the preliminary review is positive, submissions undergo a double-blind external review. In special cases, a declaration stating the lack of a conflict of interest is required; relations which are considered conflict of interest are direct personal relation between the reviewer and the author of the text being reviewed (in particular, kinship up to the second degree and marriage), reporting relationships, or direct academic cooperation during the two years preceding the year of review. The texts are peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers who are specialists in the relevant field. In the case of manuscripts written in English or German, at least one of the peer reviewers has a foreign affiliation, but a   different one than that of the author.

  3. The Author is informed of the outcome of the peer review process within three months from the editorial board confirming that the text has passed the internal review and will be peer-reviewed externally.

  4. The review form is available at rewiev form
  5. The reviews are written and contain an unambiguous recommendation of the reviewer concerning the publication of the text.

  6. If the reviewer suggests important revisions, upon which the publication of the text is contingent, the Author should revise the text as directed or alternatively inform the editorial board why he or she is rejecting the suggestions.

  7. In the event of a substantial divergence in the conclusions of two reviews, the editorial board may, upon analysing the conclusions, commission another review.

  8. A submitted text is published when reviewers conclude that it should be published without revisions or when the Author has revised the text in accordance with the recommendation of the reviewers.

  9. A submitted text is not published if (1) it has not been qualified for the review process due to divergence from the thematic profile of the journal; or (2) if it did not pass the preliminary internal review process and thus was not qualified for peer review; or (3) if the recommendation of the reviewers is not to publish; or (4) if the Author has not made major revisions recommended by reviewers.

  10. The names of peer reviewers are given (for the whole year) only in the second issue of the year and also in the attachment including the list of reviewers.

  11. The editorial board strives to ensure compliance of the review procedure with recommendations contained in "Good practices in the review procedures in Science” and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) principles.

  12. Articles submitted for publication in „Culture and Values” should contain: 1) a clearly stated research problem which is addressed in the text; 2) clearly stated research conclusions; 3) a critical discussion of other approaches and solutions to the analysed problem; 4) a statement of what is innovative about the proposed approach compared to existing ones; 5) a clearly defined methodology applied in the course of the article. Apart from the main text, the Author should prepare a summary in Polish and English; a list of key words in Polish and English, and a bibliography in the format accepted by Culture and Values. If possible, the bibliography of secondary sources should contain DOI numbers of the sources cited. During the process of submitting an article or another text, the Author should abide by the instructions on the website through which the text is submitted.

 

Publication Frequency

Deadline for the receipt of manuscripts: six months prior to the planned date of publication of the respective issue. The first issue of the journal in the year is published   in June /July, the second in December.

 

Open Access Policy

Culture and Values is an open access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the BOAI (Budapest Open Access Initiative) definition of open access. The articles are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY)

Statement of the Ethical Principles of the Journal "Kultura i Wartości"

Procedures and standards applied in “Kultura i Wartości” comply with principles defined by COPE   (Committee on Publication Ethics)  https://publicationethics.org/.  Accordingly, guidelines to be followed in our journal have been laid down for editors, authors and peer reviewers.

The editors shall:

  1. Ensure the integrity and compliance of the publishing procedure throughout all its stages with accepted ethical standards.  Monitor compliance with the  copyright law.
  2. Consider acceptance of manuscripts for peer reviewing procedure objectively taking into account solely their compatibility with the thematic scope of the journal and the preliminary assessment of their factual value.
  3. Select peer  reviewers competent  to evaluate the works fairly. 
  4.  Keep in confidence the author’s personal data during the reviewing procedure.
  5. Follow COPE guidelines in the event of detecting instances of scientific misconduct, and in particular disclose and point out any incidence of plagiarism, "ghost-writing" and "guest authorship". Report such incidents to the competent persons and authorities.
  6. Decide to publish manuscripts guided by the reviewers’ conclusions.
  7. Refuse publication of a manuscript  when (1) it was not  qualified for the review procedure due to its non-compliance with the thematic scope  of the journal ; (2) it  did not  receive  a preliminary positive  review and consequently   was not  delegated to  external  peer reviewers; (3) forwarded conclusions in the  reviews were negative; (4)  the author failed to make  essential  corrections  suggested  by the reviewers.
  8. In the event of significant discrepancies between the recommendations of the two reviewers, consider referring the manuscript to the third reviewer.
  9. Notify the author immediately about the editorial board’s decision to publish or reject the manuscript, and state the reasons for the latter.

The authors shall:

  1. Declare that the manuscript submitted for publication is original and has not been published (or is not being currently processed for publication) in other journals.
  2.  Inform of other persons’ contribution   to their work, specifying its nature and scope, and include these data in an accompanying file.
  3. List any   sources of funding of the work, and enclose the details in an accompanying file.
  4. Accurately list all publications used   in preparing the manuscript and quote the titles and page numbers of their own works dealing with a similar subject.
  5. Avoid giving any   information in the manuscript submitted for review that might disclose the author’s identity.
  6. Provide any other information, if available, relevant in terms of scientific integrity and ethical standards of the manuscript, yet not given   in the form filled-in when submitting the manuscript. Such information should be provided in an accompanying file.
  7. Give content-related comments on remarks and suggestions presented in the reviews.

 

 

The    peer reviewers shall:

  1. Make a reliable and objective assessment of the manuscripts, highlighting their strong points as well as sections of the work which  in their view need correction.
  2.  Complete the reviews according to schedule as agreed with the editorial board.
  3. Notify the editorial board of plagiarism or other instances of misconduct incompatible with scientific integrity standards.
  4.  Advise the editorial board of any  suspected conflicts of interests or information in the manuscript that might identify its author.
  5.  Maintain confidentiality of all information concerning  the manuscripts reviewed.
