Truth and Honest y in Ayn Rand’s Political Philosophy
Abstract
Ayn Rand was an American writer, journalist and philosopher, sometimes counted among the American radical liberalism or libertarianism. The primary purpose of the article is to indicate how Rand understood the value of truth, how the virtue of honesty is related to it and how both of them have influenced her political philosophy. The first part of the article presents the understanding of truth in Rand’s political philosophy. The second part is devoted to the foundations of her interpretation of truth that we can find in the doctrine of the libertarian objectivist school. The third part shows the practical dimension of truth by showing its place in the life of an individual human being. The fourth part describes honesty as a virtue responding to the need for truth. The article is the result of an analysis of the content of the most important Rand’s texts, in which she took up the issues of truth and honesty. The main method used in the study was the hermeneutic-phenomenological one. Thanks to that it was possible to extract the meaning of the conceptual categories used by Rand with their theoretical foundations.
