Fryderyk Moritz's Collaborators – Franciszek Malewski, Tomasz Zan, Onufry Pietraszkiewicz and ... "the little-known printer" Siemion Seliwanowski in the Philomaths’ Correspondence

Abstract

The article recalls the figures associated and cooperating with Fryderyk Moritz - the Malewski family, Tomasz Zan and Onufry Pietraszkiewicz. For the first time, it introduces to the Polish reader the figure of the Moscow printer – Siemion Seliwanowski. So far, due to previous editions of collections from the Archives of Philomaths, he was considered a little-known figure who did not play a significant role in the cultural life of Moscow at that time. The text shows that this is an erroneous judgment. Siemion Seliwanowski was not only an important printer, publisher of the most important works in both the field of literature and science, a figure associated with the local university, but also a member of the cultural elite of Moscow. It should  not be also forgotten that Siemion Seliwanowski played a significant role in the Decembrist movement, for which he paid a high price in the form of confiscation of materials for the prepared Russian encyclopedia. Thus, he is neither an unknown nor an insignificant figure, who finally, after over  20 years since the publication of the edition prepared by Zbigniew Sudolski, needed to be brought closer to the reader of the Philomathic correspondence.
