Focus and Scope

Annales UMCS, sectio B (Geography, Geology, Mineralogy and Petrography) is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the UMCS Department of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management. The journal has been printed continuously since 1946. It features articles (in Polish or English) devoted to widely-understood Earth sciences. The Editorial Board is particularly interested in scientific papers in the field of geology, physical geography, socio-economic geography, tourism, land management, geoinformatics and related sciences. Annales UMCS sec. B is released on an open-access basis, its readership including both representatives of the scientific circles and economic practitioners.

Peer Review Process

The procedure of reviewing follows the directions formulated by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in “Dobre praktyki w procedurach recenzyjnych w nauce” (Good practices in reviewing procedures in science)

1. The articles submitted to the Editorial Board are preliminary verified by editors in formal and substantive terms. Texts which contain obvious errors (e.g. failure to comply with the formatting rules, incomplete graphic material, structure which is inappropriate for a scientific paper, content inadequate for the journal profile) will not be admitted to the editorial process.

2. Articles that have been initially approved are passed to two independent reviewers who are not members of the author’s unit and who:

  • have no conflict of interest with the author/s,
  • have no official relationship with the author/s,
  • are specialists  in a given field and hold at least a PhD degree and the adequate scientific achievements,
  • are perceived as reliable reviewers.

3. Reviewing is based on the model which is recommended by the Ministry, ensuring that the author/s and reviewer/s do not know one another’s identity (the double-blind review process).

4. The Editorial Board provides the abstract of the article to the potential reviewer who can take an independent decision on accepting or rejecting the article for review. The decision must be taken within the period determined by the Editorial Board (up to 10 days).

5. The reviewers are obliged to keep their opinions on the article confidential, and they are not allowed to use their knowledge on the article content before its publication.

6. The reviewer's duty is to complete the review form (available by logging into the system), and mark / make comments in the text and send the file to the Editorial Board (the option available in the system). The review ends with a recommendation (selection from the list):

  • Accept the text submitted
  • Corrections required
  • Another review required
  • To be submitted to a different journal
  • Reject the text
  • Recommendations in comments

7. The reviewer is obliged to review the text within the date determined by the Editorial Board (in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education).

8. The reviews are presented to the author who is obliged to familiarize him/herself with all the comments, which are binding on him/her. Complying with the deadline (set by the Editorial Board), the author sends the corrected text which contains answers to the reviewers’ comments (separate file) and – if necessary – the corrected graphic material (separate files), by logging in to the Annales system.

9. The publication decision is made by the editors, having analysed the comments and conclusions included in the reviews, together with the author’s answers and the final version of the article submitted by the author.

10. After the technical preparation and editing process, the article is sent to the author for proofreading; without it the article cannot be printed. The proofreading process should focus only on spelling mistakes; any additional changes in the text or figures proposed by the author at this stage, may only be accepted in justified cases.

 

Publication Frequency

Annales UMCS, sec. B is an annual journal. The articles are collected continuously. After the successful completion of the review process, the articles will be published in the on-line version with the DOI number.

 

Open Access Policy

The journal uses the Library of Science (https://bibliotekanauki.pl/). Access to all material held in the repository is open. The repository follows the Open Archive Initiative's (OAI) metadata retrieval protocol, making the documents in the repository easy to find through services that collect information about digital scientific resources.

The journal's editors have a policy on digital preservation through archiving. The version published online (the publisher's final file) is stored on the UMCS digital library platform indefinitely.

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
