Future research perspectives of the Jewish cemetery in Szczebrzeszyn
Abstract
The article focuses primarily on the unique features of the Jewish cemetery in Szczebrzeszyn.
Next, it presents the current state of research concerning this place. The findings clearly suggest that despite the considerable interest of local historians and academics, the cemetery has not yet been fully studied and documented. After enumeration of the most important scientific sources used as the basis of methodological assumptions, the initial list of research problems is presented, including the stages of spatial development and internal organization of the cemetery, formal and stylistic elements of tombstones, tombstone design (along with the categorization of themes, motifs, and symbols), as well as formal and linguistic
characteristics of inscriptions. The article ends with general conclusions concerning the importance of further research on the cemetery.
